Following the declaration of a nationwide strike by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the University of Benin Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), have directed all her members to fully comply and stay away from their respective offices from Thursday, 27th September, 2018.
The directive was contained in a Press Statement dated September 26, 2018, and issued by UNIBEN’s NASU Chairman, Comrade J. O. Idonije, and his SSANU counterpart, Comrade O. B. Osewa respectively.
It read: “Following the fourteen (14) days ultimatum given to the Federal Government over the non-implementation of the new minimum wage which is due to elapse by 12 midnight Wednesday, 26th September, 2018…
“The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has directed that all her affliate Unions are to join in the warning strike, by extension, all members of NASU and SSANU are to stay away from their respective offices from Thursday, 27th September, 2018.
“In the light of the above, all members of NASU and SSANU are by this notice advised to proceed on NLC strike with immediate effect from Thursday, 27th September, 2018 until further directives.”
When contacted, SSANU Chairman, Comrade O. B. Osewa could not be reached for comments. But his NASU counterpart, Comrade J. O. Idonije confirmed the authenticity of the publication, and affirmed that such directive actually emanated from both unions.
When asked by our correspondent if the strike would affect the ongoing second semester exams, the union boss preferred not to say.
