…as CPC postpones accreditation, election
Fight broke out early Saturday afternoon at the Old Parade ground, Abuja, venue of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Convention.
The fighting occurred as Delegates and Senators were preparing to elect new leaders for the student body.
The tenure of the group’s Chinoso Obasi and Aruna Kadiri have since elapsed.
It took the frantic efforts of stakeholders on ground to bring the situation under control, as aspirants were seen exchanging blow as soon as argument broke out within their camp.
CAMPUS GIST gathered that one of the aspirants who was seriously beaten and wounded, was taken to Wuse District hospital, Abuja for treatment.
The reason for the pandemonium was not readily ascertained, but an eyewitness who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, said: “It was only an argument between candidates from Delta state. The argument resulted into a fight within their camp. A certain amount of money was released to them for the convention, N3.5million… But the SA to Governor Okowa on Student Matters refused to release the money. But instead, he sent thugs to beat up the aspirants.
“Mehn… See war between SA to Governor of Delta state and comrades ooo… On top money!”, she exclaimed.
Efforts to obtain comment from Secretary of the Convention Planning Committee (CPC) were unsuccessful, as his phone lines were either busy or switched off. But sources close to him said that the convention has been postponed till tomorrow.
“It is true they almost fought, but it is normal with NANS. The convention has been shifted. We are just here in Abuja, nothing is really happening. They said that accreditation and election will now hold tomorrow”, I hope it does”, the source disclosed.
